Strategy that starts with purpose and ends with impact.

A practical framework for Boards and executives to connect purpose, people, Theory of Change, strategy, governance and evidence, so organisational performance remains aligned with the change the organisation exists to create.

What are we optimising for?

Every organisation optimises for something. Growth. Revenue. Compliance. Efficiency. Market position. Organisational survival. Human outcomes. Social impact. The leadership task is to make those choices visible and ensure they remain aligned with purpose.

Purpose can remain constant while organisations drift

Purpose-led organisations operate in complexity. They need to remain financially sustainable, manage risk, respond to regulation, grow capability, deliver services and meet stakeholder expectations. All of those things matter.

But organisational success is not automatically the same as social impact. Growth, revenue, compliance, activity and market position can all improve while the connection to the people and communities an organisation exists to serve becomes weaker.

Purpose to Impact creates a disciplined way to test that connection. It is not anti-growth, anti-investment or anti-commercial. It asks a more useful question: how do those choices contribute to the change we say we exist to create?

The Purpose to Impact framework

1. Purpose

Why do we exist beyond our current programs, contracts or organisational form?

3. Intended impact

What should be meaningfully different because we exist?

5. Strategic choices

Where will we act, where will we not act, and what will we prioritise?

7. Governance & accountability

How do leadership and governance protect purpose while enabling performance?

2. People & community

Who ultimately benefits? Whose knowledge, experience and voice should shape our choices?

4. Theory of Change

What do we believe needs to happen for that change to occur, and what assumptions are we making?

6. Capability & resources

What people, culture, partnerships, systems and capital are required?

8. Evidence & learning

How will we know change is occurring, listen to affected people and adapt when the evidence challenges us?

The Purpose Drift test

Purpose drift is rarely a single decision. It usually happens gradually as legitimate organisational pressures begin to outweigh the intended human or social outcome.

The Purpose Drift Diagnostic tests a strategic priority, investment, program or major decision across nine dimensions: purpose alignment, human or community benefit, voice and influence, evidence, strategic fit, capability, sustainability, system impact and accountability.

The aim is not to manufacture a high score. It is to expose where the link between purpose, people, strategy and organisational interest is weak, contested or unproven.

Who this is for

Purpose to Impact is designed for organisations where social or public value sits alongside commercial, operational, regulatory or stakeholder pressures.

  • Boards and executives of charities, not-for-profits and purpose-led organisations
  • Disability, housing, health and human services organisations
  • Government-funded organisations and organisations operating in regulated markets
  • Peak bodies, advocacy organisations and member-based organisations
  • Social enterprises and purpose-led businesses navigating scale or investment

What good work leaves behind

  • A clear line of sight from purpose to intended impact
  • Strategic priorities linked to outcomes rather than activity alone
  • Visible assumptions, trade-offs and tensions
  • Stronger Board questions and decision discipline
  • Better evidence about whether people, communities or systems are actually better
  • A practical 90-day pathway to address alignment or evidence gaps

How I work

I bring more than 25 years of leadership experience across disability, housing, human services and complex regulated environments, including more than 15 years working directly with Boards, executives and senior leadership teams.

My experience spans chief executive and senior executive leadership, Board governance, organisational transformation, strategy and risk, government engagement, market stewardship and systems reform. My approach combines executive judgement, governance discipline, evidence, systems thinking and lived expertise.

I work to create clarity and accountability while leaving leaders and organisations more capable of solving the next problem themselves.
